what is the MIM

 

The manufacturing capabilities of metal injection molding (MIM) allows for the large-scale production of intricate shapes. The method makes use of fine metal particles (usually smaller than 20 micrometers) that have been specially mixed with a binder (different types of waxes, thermoplastics, and other materials) to create a feedstock. In a traditional injection molding machine, the feedstock is fed into one or more cavities. The majority of the binder is extracted by thermal or solvent processing after the "green" component has been eliminated, and the remainder is eliminated when the component is sintered (solid-state dispersed) in a furnace with a controlled environment. The MIM method can provide many of the same shapes and configuration features as high-pressure die casting and plastic injection molding.

 

As a net-shape process method with strong dimensional tolerance control, metal injection molding offers the benefit of producing mechanical qualities that are almost identical to those of wrought materials. The shape and geometric features of metal injection molded items are almost infinite, and multi-cavity tooling allows for high production rates.
